Para Taekwondo

The U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang is proud to announce the addition of Para-Taekwondo!

Events

There will only be 2 events: Individual Creative Board Breaking (ICBP) and Individual Traditional Forms (ITFP )

ITFP vs. IT

  1. ITF = 90 seconds to perform; ITFP =120 seconds to perform
  2. ITF = must perform Kukkiwon Poomsae designated by Geup/Dan; ITFP = Can perform any Kukkiwon Poomsae (NOT ITF, ATA, etc) regardless of Geup/Dan
  3. ITF = must perform poomsae independently; ITFP = participants will be allowed to have an aide – it could be their parent, support worker, instructor. As often many para athletes may require assistance with bathroom, mobility access, or just overcoming their anxiety. This is done in all para/disability sports
  4. Aides MUST register online like any participant to sign waiver and acquire badge.  Aides will NOT have to pay to serve in this role.  There will be a code given to “zero” out the invoice

ICB vs ICBP

  1. ICB = 60 seconds to setup and 60 seconds to break; ICBP = 90 seconds to setup and 90 seconds to break
  2. ICB = maximum 6 boards to break; ICBP = maximum 4 boards to break
  3. ITB = must perform poomsae independently; ICBP = participants will be allowed to have an aide – it could be their parent, support worker, instructor.

General Guidelines

1. The divisions should be divided into:

  • Intellectual/Developmental Impairments
  • Motor/Physical Impairments
  • Visual Impairment

2. Those are the typical divisions in paralympic sports.  However, there are many sub-divisions (classification) within one disability group… For example a person with cerebral palsy may be mobile with slight paralysis to one in a wheelchair. It would be best to have them type in their impairment, so we can be better prepared and also divide the divisions according to ability

3. Deaf/Hard of Hearing is officially not a Paralympic Sport … I would have them registered in the regular divisions are they are very able-bodied to compete against others (unless they have other challenges as well (ie. deaf and down syndrome)
